If you're reading this article I'll assume you've already decided to dive in to Week 17 DFS. I assume you know the positives and negatives, so I'll just give you one piece of advice: Stick to GPPs. There's too much uncertainty to get a reliable feel on cash games this week. With that in mind, we'll look for the best GPP value plays in Week 17. The Value Play at each position is based off of the projections of David Dodds, while the Bargain Buy is my personal recommendation. You don't want a roster full of these guys, but using 1-2 of them could help you win your GPP.
Quarterback
Value Play
Case Keenum ($5000) vs. Jacksonville- Keenum wasn't exactly a star in his first game back, but you don't need a star at this price. The Jaguars pass defense is susceptible to the big play and Keenum has built a great rapport with Andre Johnson. For this price you could do a lot worse than a quarterback with these weapons and this subpar opponent. His floor is around 2x value with a ceiling much higher.
Bargain Buy
Chase Daniel ($5000) vs. San Diego- I highlighted in the FanDuel article a few of the reasons that we like Daniel, but here's another. There's a growing sentiment in Kansas City that Daniel is really just a cheaper version of the team's starter, Alex Smith. He showed some of that in his lone 2013 start against this same team. Daniel has the highest upside and safest floor of any quarterback in this range.
Running Back
Value Play
Matt Asiata ($5000) vs. Chicago- Asiata has been a touchdown monster when he's gotten the opportunity and he should get plenty of opportunity this week. This Bears defense doesn't scare anyone at this point and the development of Teddy Bridgewater should loosen up the Bears front seven. You may not get another 3 touchdown outburst but 3x value seems like a relatively safe bet.
Bargain Buy
Devonta Freeman ($3600) vs. Carolina- The Falcons face off against the Panthers in a game that will decide the NFC South. Unfortunately for Atlanta they'll likely be without their starting running back, Steven Jackson. That should open the door for rookie Devonta Freeman to go up against what has been one of the most disappointing run defenses in the league.
Wide Receiver
Value Play
Terrance Williams ($3500) vs. Washington- Williams has been really hot and cold this year but he warmed back up with two touchdowns in Week 16. As I mentioned in the FanDuel article, I expect Washington to turn this game into a shootout, and Dallas will have good reason to rest their veterans in the second half. Williams should see an uptick in targets which should lead to plenty of value.
Bargain Buy
James Jones ($3500) vs. Denver- For most of the year James Jones has been Derek Carr's favorite target. That's changed a little bit lately, but he's still scored a touchdown in each of the past two weeks. Against the Broncos I expect to see a lot of Carr throws, with him needing to get rid of the ball quickly. Jones has primarily been used within five yards of the line of scrimmage, which should make him particularly useful in this game.
Tight End
Value Play
Mychal Rivera ($3300) vs. Denver- If you don't like Jones (or even if you do) Rivera is a very solid play. He's been a top five fantasy tight end in the second half as he's built rapport with Carr. Rivera has, for the most part, eliminated the drops that plagued him early in the year and provided a spark when the Raiders offense needed it most. His target volume alone should provide him with a safe floor in this game.
Bargain Buy
Jermaine Gresham ($3200) vs. Pittsburgh- Speaking of target monsters, Gresham has been the antithesis for PPR believers. He doesn't do much after the catch and rarely averages more than 7-8 yards per grab, but his volume alone is enough to meet value at this price. If Gresham gets into the end zone, as many have against the Steelers, he could be a huge asset in a strange Week 17 slate. A.J. Green's injury only makes him more valuable.
Defense
New Orleans Saints ($2400) vs. Tampa Bay- Could the Saints roll over in a Week 17 game that means nothing? It's possible, but I wouldn't bet on it with Sean Payton at the helm. I expect the Saints to unleash blitz after blitz, forcing several Buccaneers turnovers. Just know there is a slight risk of a complete letdown by New Orleans.
